Alpaca fiber is a relatively rare commodity.
Only about 4000 tons are produced compared to 1,851,000
tons of wool each year!
The alpaca industry in the United States
has progressed from a cottage industry to a growing production
industry. A strong owners and breeders organization (AOBA),
and a national fiber cooperative (AFCNA)
assisting in the processing of raw fleece and the marketing
of finished Alpaca products are helping ensure the continued
growth.
Commercial North American spinning mills
are processing the increasing quantities of fiber being
produced and American-made finished products are being produced.
The volumes are a long way from the production volumes found
in Peru for example, with 2-3 million animals.
The implications for the North American
industry to continue to grow are easy to see - we need more
animals!
