As
you may know, the alpaca is a herd animal. If you intend
to buy just one, it is not really fair to the animal to
take it home and put it on your pasture. He or she will
probably become stressed and die because of the lack of
companions. If you can only afford one, it would be better
to agist (board) the animal with a ranch and visit when
you can. Some people will buy a breeding age female and
a companion gelding male for company. Talk to your favorite
alpaca breeder and ask their advice, there are plenty of
options.

You
can of course buy as many as you want, but take into account
the infrastructure you will need. About 5-8 animals an acre
is a good average. You can split up your acreage how you
want but consider grass quality/availability, water fencing
etc. Check our
links on facilities for an example of pasture layout,
fencing and so on.
Take
some time to consider your business plan and what you want
to breed in your animals - all color, all white, suri, huacaya.
The mix that you come up with will dictate price and quantity.
