The demand for the fleece and alpaca products
worldwide continues to outstrip supply providing increasing
opportunities for new and established breeders and manufacturers.
The lifespan of the alpaca in North America
is probably about 20 years and gestation is 11.5 months,
providing a naturally slow expansion of herds.
There are two types of alpacas - the Huacaya
and the Suri. The fleece of each type
varies. The Suri has distinctive cords of fleece, while
the Huacaya grows a fleece that has a fluffy look to it
and is crimped.
The alpaca fleece produces one of the world's
finest and most luxurious natural fibers. The fleece is
as soft as cashmere and warmer, lighter and stronger than
wool. Alpaca fleece comes in 22 naturally occurring basic
colors - more colors than any other fiber producing animal,
from white to black. Sometimes an alpaca will provide multiple
colors from a single fleece. Not only is the fleece highly
sought after by spinners and weavers, but more significantly
is in great demand for fashion houses and garment producers.
